Ad Formats

Ad Formats
expo-MAX ads can be placed throughout your site or blog using cut and paste codes. The code will automatically generate the ad dynamically using the formats below. Each ad format has its own advantages and disadvantages, some of which are typical across all types of websites. Below are a few tips for using each ad unit type—but as always, the ideal ad type will depend on your site’s layout and the browsing habits of your readership. We’ve included a wide variety of ad unit formats so you can experiment, text and tweak for the best performance.

Horizontal Ads

Horizontal ads are excellent eye catchers. Provided that the website design allows it, the wider the ad you can get, the better. The Leaderboard Ad (728x90) is the widest expo-MAX Ads horizontal ad and performs well at the very top of the page, along the bottom in the footer or in the middle of the content between sections. The Blog Banner (468x120) and the Banner (468x90) fit nicely near the center of the page. A banner at the top of the editorial content has high visibility, while a banner at the bottom of the editorial content serves as an implicit call-to-action and a logical place for readers to click after they are done reading a post or article.

Vertical Ads

Vertical ads work well in two- and three-column website designs and are particularly conducive to content-driven websites and blogs. Vertical ads—often called skyscraper ad units—have a prolonged visibility. Skyscraper ad units can be visible above the fold and remain on screen as the reader scrolls downward. The Wide Skyscraper (160x600) works well on the left-hand side—content is read from left-to-right, so web users will continually return their attention to the ads alongside the text. The smaller Skyscraper (120x600) can be tucked alongside other widgets, navigation menus and elements on the right or left sidebar.

Square and Rectangle Ads

Square and rectangle ads are versatile and attractive to the eye. Rather than being obtrusive, square and rectangle ads can actually improve the aesthetics of a website design. The Large Rectangle (336x280) and Medium Rectangle (300x250) ad units are best suited for this purpose. Inline Large and Medium Rectangle included at the top or middle of the content break up large blocks of text, making the content more enticing to web readers. Square (250x250) and Small Square (200x200) can be grouped into sidebars or placed alongside navigation menus.
